Bird Dog Training
A bird dog training permit (click here for application form) is required to train bird dogs on private or public lands, except licensed shooting preserves, when the release of artificially propagated upland game birds or waterfowl will be part of the training process. No permit is required to train bird dogs on wild birds when no attempt to take wild birds is made or when feral pigeons are used for training purposes.
Dog Field Trial Permit
A dog field trial permit (click here for application form) is required to sponsor or conduct any organized competitive dog trial or tests on private or public lands, except on private shooting preserves, when artificially propagated game birds are used. This permit is required even if live birds are not used or released during a field trial conducted on Idaho Fish and Game wildlife management areas.
Game Farm Birds
All artificially propagated game birds released or utilized for dog field trials or on shooting preserves must originate from a National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP) certified source. Game bird establishments in Idaho that have qualified for certification in the NPIP for the year 2007 can be found at this Idaho Department of Agriculture website. Also, anyone wishing to buy game birds or eggs for their own use is encouraged to contact a NPIP certified source. See the above link or contact the Idaho Department of Agriculture for more information regarding the NPIP.
People buying game birds are encouraged to buy them from these sources.
