Abstract:

Bethlehem Mine in the U. S. Forest Service Northern Region, Bonner County, Idaho, was entered by use of rope and vertical caving gear via the ungated skylight entrance. Several woodrat middens were present near the entrance of the mine, as well as several large Opilliones (harvestmen) clusters (Figs. 1 and 2). The entire mine was thoroughly investigated for bat sign over the course of several hours. Guano was not identified anywhere in the mine. Four bats were observed in the mine. Notably, their roosting location was not protected by a thermocline; rather, their location between three open entrances permits airflow with temperatures consistent with outside conditions. All bats were identified as Corynorhinus townsendii. Soil samples were taken.
