Abstract:

A brief report is provided for the 2014 monitoring effort for Jessica’s aster (Symphyotrichum jessicae) on US Army Corps of Engineers land near Dworshak Reservoir.
On 25-27 August 2014, IDNHP staff collected data from four monitoring plots on US Army Corps of Engineers land near Dworshak Reservoir.
While not discussing the results of these data in the report, IDNHP wants to bring special attention to the dramatic decrease in stem numbers at plot 3 (Freeman Creek Peninsula). Although there are several non-native species in plot 3 (the only plot to have spotted knapweed), their density does not appear high enough to outcompete Jessica’s aster. Cover within the plot is primarily native. The primary competition seems more likely to come from the dense growth of bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata), a native bunchgrass, and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata), a non-native pasture grass, in much of the plot. Another impact to consider is the reported allelopathic effects of spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa).
