Abstract:

Kristen Pekas and Juanita Lichthardt surveyed Red River WMA for rare plants on 16-17 June 2014. One element occurrence (EO 34) of Idaho barren strawberry (Waldsteinia idahoensis, ranked G3 S3) had previously been documented at the WMA during a cursory visit. A more thorough search for this species was conducted within the WMA. The original subpopulation and an additional subpopulation were mapped. Idaho barren strawberry occurred in forested portions of the WMA.
Ponds along the floodplain were searched for water howellia (Howellia aquatilis, ranked G3 S1 and listed as Threatened under ESA), but not found. The only water howellia associates we noted were inflated sedge (Carex vesicaria) and common spikerush (Eleocharis palustris).
Bristle-stalked sedge (Carex leptalea, ranked S2, G5) was another species targeted, but not found.
Much of the vegetation at Red River WMA is native; however, reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) is present and becomes more abundant near the stream bank. The presence of three noxious weeds was also noted: houndstongue (Cynoglossum officinale), Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), and oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare).
