In any year, May is a fantastic time to be an angler in Southwest Idaho, as stocking ramps back up throughout the region and many waters get their first big shot of fish since the fall. There are a few other things that make this May unique.
As part of ongoing efforts to monitor the population of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, biologists from Idaho Fish and Game will begin annual research trapping grizzly bears in the Upper Snake Region beginning in May.
The Idaho Fish and Game Commission is scheduled to hold a special conference call on Tuesday, May 13 at 9 a.m. MDT. The Commission is scheduled to make a decision to modify 2025 spring Chinook seasons.
On May 5, 1899, Governor Frank Steunenberg appointed 36-year-old Charles H. Arbuckle—a member of Idaho’s House of Representatives—to the Office of State Game Warden. During his two-year appointment, Arbuckle successfully started hiring deputy game wardens across the state to enforce the new laws.
Hunters who applied for controlled hunts for moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat hunts can see if they drew a tag by going to www.GoOutdoorsIdaho.com. The second application period for unissued moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat tags will be June 15-25.

Sometime during the week of May 4 through May 10, Idaho Fish and Game staff will be assisting the City of Caldwell with an herbicide application at Caldwell Rotary Pond to knock back invasive aquatic weeds that frequently make the pond unfishable in the summer months. The actual date of the treatment will depend on pond conditions and weather.
